Install

Up and snapping in three steps

  1. 1

    Open the disk image

Open the file you downloaded and drag SnapForMac onto the Applications folder.

  2. 2

    Allow Accessibility

Open SnapForMac. It asks for the Accessibility permission and takes you to the right page of System Settings. Switch SnapForMac on there.

  3. 3

    Snap a window

Click any window, then press Control, Option and the left arrow. The Learn page shows four more shortcuts to try.

The permission

The one thing macOS will ask you for

An app can move another app's window only with the Accessibility permission. SnapForMac asks for it on first launch and cannot snap anything until you switch it on.

  • What it is for. Reading where a window is, and moving and resizing it.

  • What it is not for. The app does not read what is inside a window and does not watch the keyboard.

  • You can take it back. Switch it off in System Settings at any time. The app notices and tells you snapping is off.

What the permission is used for
  1. 1

Open SnapForMac. A page explains the permission and has a button that opens System Settings.

  2. 2

In System Settings, under Privacy & Security, Accessibility, switch SnapForMac on. macOS asks for your password or Touch ID.

  3. 3

Go back to what you were doing. SnapForMac notices by itself and starts working: there is nothing to quit or reopen.

What you need

  • macOS 13 Ventura or later. It runs on macOS 13, 14 and 15.

  • Any Mac chip. There is a download for Apple Silicon and one for Intel.

  • The Accessibility permission. Asked for once, on first launch.

  • No account. Nothing to sign up for. Pro is a licence key you paste in.

Which Mac do I have?

  1. Open the Apple menu in the top left corner and choose About This Mac.
  2. A line that starts with Chip and names an Apple chip (M1, M2, M3, M4 or later) means Apple Silicon.
  3. A line that starts with Processor and names Intel means an Intel Mac. Take the Intel download.
  4. The same window shows your macOS version. SnapForMac needs macOS 13 Ventura or later.

More answers on Support

Which Macs can run SnapForMac?

Any Mac running macOS 13 Ventura or later, with Apple Silicon or an Intel chip.

Why does it need the Accessibility permission?

macOS lets one app move another app's window only through the Accessibility permission. SnapForMac uses it to read where a window is and to move and resize it, and for nothing else.

Where is the app after I open it?

In the menu bar, at the top right of the screen. There is no Dock icon unless you switch "Show in Dock" on in Settings.

What can I do without paying?

Snap to halves and quarters, maximise, centre and restore by keyboard, drag a window to an edge or a corner, move windows between displays, and use the Snap Layouts bar 5 times a day. That part is free with no time limit.

Do I need an account?

No. The free version needs nothing. Pro is a licence key you paste into Settings.
